- each month, the eg3.com editorial staff
surveys thousands of web sites to identify the 'best' or
'most interesting' news, white papers, demo's, and other
electronic design sites - focused specifically on
designers of electronic products. here are our
highlights and top choices from the last thirty days.

The need for speed - as important in embedded design as
in cars, or modems. The last few months have thus seen a
variety of announcements amongst competitive and complementary
standards for interconnect and networking. Late last year, for
example, VITA
announced VITA 41 and VITA 46 , designed to
enhance VME speed. VITA 41, VME Switched Serial (VXS),
combines the existing event-driven parallel VMEbus with
enhancements to support switch fabrics over a new P0
connection. VITA 46, VME PCI Serial Switched Fabrics, breaks
out from the traditional connector schemeof VMEbus to merge
the latest in connector technology with the latest in bus
technology. Check out the comparison white paper, here
, as well as Mercury
Computer Systems' Next-Generation VME Road Map .
Much-hyped PCI
Express continues to advance into embedded systems. The
PCI SIG announced PCI
Express 1.1 & PCI Firmware 3.0 Technical Update to
take place on Friday, February 25, 2005, in Milpitas,
California. It's an opportunity for PCI Express vendors to
verify and learn about compliance issues. PLX
Technology announced sampling of their recently introduced
PLX® ExpressLane PEX 8111 PCI Express-to-PCI bridge, here
.
And, RapidIO
bounced against PCI Express by publishing an innovative
new book, RapidIO
: The Embedded System Interconnect , and an excellent,
free white paper, RapidIO®
Technology and PCI Express™-A Comparison . The conclusion
of both is that the two technologies are as complementary as
competitive. On the vendor side, Mercury
Computer Systems announced availability of a serial
RapidIO-based silicon IP core , and look for an exciting
RapidIO announcement from Tundra
later this week.

Many design projects involve purchasing expensive
hardware or software in an environment of uncertainty.
Fortunately, many vendors have responded in innovative ways to
provide 'try-before-buy' opportunities to 'sample' their
technologies. It's a bit like embedded dating, before embedded
marriage. One innovative Web site is Demos
on Demand , focused primarily on system-on-chip
technologies and consisting largely of video demonstrations by
vendors of their technologies. The venerable Techonline
continues to promote their '
VirtuaLab service. This novel service allows you to
interact with real hardware via the Internet simply by
booking and reserving an appointment.
Finally, many of the electronics distributors offer low
cost training events or evaluation kits. Memec
, for instance, just announced the Xilinx
X-Fest 2005 Workshops . Coming April through July, these
technical workshops are ideal for programmable logic and
system designers who want to try out Xilinx
technologies. But the best program is undoubtedly that run by
Avnet
. Their Avnet
Avenue Solutions offers design kits on technologies like
AdvancedTCA
to vendors like Xilinx, Freescale, Renesas and more.
And don't forget that eg3.com also tracks demos,
webinars, eval kits and other free or inexpensive
opportunities to 'try before buy'. We even track this all by
keyword, here
. Enjoy!

Among interesting sites new to eg3.com in January,
we located a great TCP/IP tutorial from Catalyst, An
Introduction to TCP/IP Programming . The tutorial
navigation is a bit confusing - pay attention to the right
hand column as you navigate. Freescale
announced their summer technology forum, here
. This event combines previous Freescale Semiconductor
developer events, including the Smart Networks Developer Forum
and the Embedded Connectivity Summit.
Our friends at CMP
announced a new wireless design portal, Wireless
Net Design just as the Wireless Systems Design conference
was cancelled. Perhaps everything is moving online? And Chipworks
has a very amusing gallery of hidden art in semiconductors, here
, which is a great way to pretend to be working when you're
really not.
